Frequently Asked Questions
How can I loop a video or audio using its URL?
Open audiodrill with the following URL parameters:
m=
s=
[start time]
e=
[end time]
c=
[number of cues]
r=
[number of loops per cue]
speed=
[comma-separated relative speed factors]
(Note: if
speed
parameter is set,
r
parameter is ignored)
noauto
- disable the prompt to loop
Example
https://audiodrill.com/?m=https://youtu.be/S0325A8-_A4&s=12:07&e=12:09.5&speed=1,0.5,1.2
This URL will make Audiodrill loop the clip at https://youtu.be/S0325A8-_A4 from 12:07 to 12:09.5 three times with relative speed factors of 1, 0.5, and 1.2. Speeds are
relative because the playback speed depends on the relative speed factor
and the
Master speed rate value.
How can I play the same fragment several times at a different speed?
You can set Cue speed factors in Advanced settings of loop controls. For example, setting this control to 1, 0.5, 1.2
will make each fragment play three times: at 1x, 0.5x, and 1.2x rate. Please note that these rates are relative because the playback speed also depends on the Master speed rate value.
Another option is to use speed
parameter in the URL, e.g., https://audiodrill.com?speed=1,0.5,1.2
You can also slow down temporarily by pressing and holding left Control key.
Can I loop several fragments one after another?
Yes, in loop controls you can set the number of cues to be looped in a row. This may be used, e.g., for
shadowing practice.
I've written a list of words and phrases in the text area. How can I save this list to drill it later?
Click on the Share icon to the left of the text area. The link will be copied to the clipboard. Save the link, e.g., in your workbook, so that later you could open it to drill these words and phrases.
What URL parameters are used in links to lists of words/phrases for drilling?
Such links can use the following parameters:
w=
[a comma-separated list of words/phrases]
sl=
[English words that sound like a given English word or phrase]
ml=
[English words that mean like a given English word or phrase]
lang=
[language, e.g.,
es for spanish]
wikipedia
pubchem
speed
[sets Cue speed factors in Advanced settings]
font-size
Notes:
1. Spaces between words in phrases may be replaced with hyphens or underscores, as spaces in URL can cause issues when sharing a link.
2. English is the default language, so it can be omitted.

Can I practice shadow reading?
Speech shadowing, or shadow reading, allows you to develop listening and pronunciation skills. For more information about this technique, please visit
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speech_shadowing
Audiodrill offers two ways to practice shadow reading: with video and with computer-read text. Click on
this link to see how to practice with video. Below we focus on speech shadowing with text.
In Chrome browser you can listen to a computer-read text and repeat it sentence after sentence. To do that, find the text fragment you wish to practice on the internet, copy/paste it to the text area on the
games page, activate the mic and say "Let's read together." The computer will read the first text chunk, wait for your cue, and move on. Use the following voice commands to control reading, their meaning is self-evident:
• help
• restart
• repeat
• go back
• exit
Controls under the text area allow choosing computer voice, speech rate, and the number of replays. User's speech can also be recorded and replayed.
